Gout is one of the various forms of arthritis. It is characterized by swelling, redness and sudden pain in joints. It generally affects toes, feet and joints. The excessive uric acid concentration in blood leads to formation of small pin like crystals in joints. Normally, uric acid mixes well in the bloodstream. But problems begin to arise when uric acid content increases, kidneys do not function properly to eliminate uric acid or when the intake of foods with high Purine content increases.
Gout is more common among obese people. But fasting or severe dieting can also raise the levels of uric acid in body. Thus right diet is the key to get rid of it. Extra liquid intake helps in dissolving uric acid and removing needle like crystals formed in the joints. Along with medication it’s important to maintain a proper diet in order to reduce the intake of purine rich foods.
High purine diet is to be avoided completely which includes alcoholic drink, meat and extracts, gravies, sweetbreads, yeast etc.
For gout affected people American medical association recommends
- Food rich in complex carbonates like whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
- Foods low in protein
- Food with no more than 30% of fat
Some of the recommended foods include cherries, straw berries, bananas, oranges, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables as cabbage, coffee, tea etc.
